The Irish Belgian Blue Cattle Society was founded in 1980. Its first President was Paddy Nolan who held this position for 2 years. Its first Secretary was Hugh Magee who held this position for 2 years Michael Woods then became President for 13 years. He remained on the council until he became Society Inspector following the late Maurice O'Brien who was inspector for many years previous. John Vaughan was Secretary for 20 years. In 1990 Anthony O'Connor took over as President for 9 years. Jarlath Duggan took over as Secretary from John Vaughan for three years before handing over the reigns to Richard Duff in 2004. Cyril Martin took over the Presidency from Anthony O'Connor in 2003.

The Irish Belgian Blue Cattle Society has identified the need to “modify” the highly muscled medium sized Belgian type to better suit the Irish market for larger framed more mobile working sires for natural service on dairy and suckler herds.

Our specific objectives are to:

    * Improve mobility while retaining muscularity
    * Select for improved legs and feet and free movement
    * Select for more height and length while avoiding heavy bone.         
    * Select for easy calving.

How to become an associate member (non pedigree breeders)

This membership is for people interested in Belgian Blue cattle who are not pedigree breeders. They will be able to keep in contact with Belgian Blue breeding both pedigree and commercial. For further information please contact the office.
